Deep Calls To Deep

Deep Calls To Deep

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. -Psalm 42:7   Deep calls to deep In the roar of your waterfalls All your waves and breakers Have swept over me. I had the lovely opportunity to photograph Rebecca again.  She’s effortlessly graceful and made it quite difficult to narrow down my selection.  So basically that means you get to enjoy some extra delightful outtakes! Lit by Fire

“Rage, rage against the dying of the light…” The air is thick with mist, walking through it feels more like swimming than breathing.  From a distance it looks like a cloud has descended to mingle with the trees of the forest.  It is the lovely sort of opportunity that is difficult to pass up. After scrambling a few costumes together we struggle embark down the muddy forest path.  In the midst of the mist beneath the canopy of leaves, the blue light is dying.  Disgruntled, discouraged, chilly, and the choice meal for mosquito’s, we attempt to shoot. The images are grainy, dark, and muddy.  Suddenly a warm glow illuminates the scene casting fierce shadows. Fire. Without realizing it, she had discovered the solution to our scene.  When there is no light, create it. “She slept with wolves without fear, for the wolves knew a lion was among them.” -R. M. Drake “She was like the moon—part of her was always hidden away.”― Dia Reeves   Oh yeah… and as a treat for your eyes: an unrelated explosion from earlier this summer! Yay!!! When the forest’s burning there’s no turning to say farewell. How do you calm something with an insatiable desire to...
Sisters of a Kind: Without a Plan

Sisters of a Kind: Without a Plan

When I first started taking photographs, planning was on the back burner.  I would simply grab my camera and go.  Over the years the enthusiastic spontaneity began to be replaced by calculated planning.  Both are creative and have their advantages… and disadvantages. Now I’m attempting to find a treatise between the two.  A place where I can create a structure, within which, I can move freely. The Structure By structure I mean a solid frame to build off of or within.  That might be a location, prop, costume, or model.  Whatever the structure is, you base your decisions off of it. The Spontaneity Spontaneity is where creative freedom comes into play.  There is no way to be able know the exact conditions of a shoot; that can be amazing or disappointing.  If you go into a shoot with the expectation that something will catch you off guard and surprise you, chances are you will capture a raw, unintended, wonderful moment. “Sister’s of a Kind” This sort of planned spontaneity is how the short series “Sister’s of a Kind” happened.  I knew two things: 1) where I wanted to shoot and 2) who I wanted to shoot.  As for concept: clueless.  The location was relatively new to me (and as a waterfall, its power is dependent on whether it’s rained in the past few days or not).  Going into it without a plan was nerve wracking, but the process was exciting, relaxing, adventurous and fun.  Like a mental/creative retreat. (Don’t get me wrong, I love planning out each detail too!  That’s why I have the “Wall Art” series!!!) “If you...

I am not a fan of cutting things out, never have been.  The idea of sitting down to make tiny, detailed, precise cuts makes me uncomfortable, actually sitting down to do it makes me want to crawl out of my skin.  Yet, over the course of 5 hours spread out over 4 days I painstakingly cut out over a hundred tiny butterflies (including the antennas!!! THE ANTENNAS!!!!!). To say that it was a lesson in patience is an understatement.  The goal, however, of having a complete set of photos in the end was quite a motivational force.  That and the dream of being covered in butterflies! Butterflies and moths are delicately enchanting, but sadly transient.  Their beauty flutters by and in a moment is gone.  The ancient Greeks called the butterfly “Psyche” and associated it with a person’s “soul” or...
